NPC Follow

edited May 2021 in Technical Q&A

I'm having a little issue with the NPC Follow action: the player (walk speed 10, run speed 14) is set to be followed by a cat (walk speed 8, run speed 20). When walking, the cat slowly falls behind the player, which is intended. The desired behaviour is that when the cat is beyond the maximum distance, it will run to close the distance. The problem here is that, as expected, the cat only runs up to the maximum distance, and then instantly switches back to walking - then to running, and then to walking, etc, in rapid succession. It makes the animation look very glitchy.

Would it be possible to add another setting like this?

Minimum distance: 2
Maximum distance: 20
Run distance: 10

So the cat will only move if it's 2 units away from the player. When it's 20+ units away from the player, it will start running, and it will only stop running when it's 10 units away from the player. Then it will only resume running when it falls behind to the maximum distance again.

If anyone wants to keep the current behaviour, they just need to set the maximum distance and the run distance to be the same.

  • Interesting situation. Thanks for the example scenario and values - I'll try recreating this and have a look.
