Pause menu cancels camera fade

We've come across a little "issue" with the pause menu and camera fades and I'm hoping you can suggest something.
If we bring up the pause menu in a cutscene where the camera is fading to black (or completely black) the pause menu cancels the camera fade (presumably so the menu is visible).
We'd like the pause menu not to remove the fade but still be visible.
Any suggestions?

    Exacly right - the camera's fade texture is drawn atop all else.

    You could instead rely on a Unity UI Canvas that's got a full-screen texture overlay, and control it's visibility either through animation, or by hooking it up to the Menu Manager and turning it on/off with a "Canvas Group Fade" transition.
