There is an option within the sorting map options to handle the character's scale - if you turn it off the scale keeps at 100% - thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Ok, so using a thin 2D-navmesh works but it has to be really thin and even which is quite complicated - or I haven't simply found the right shortcut yet ;-)

Ok, so I read through the tutorial and saw, that the inactive character disappears or can be replaced by an NPC. So I could simply replace the current character with the same model, only as NPC.
But will the NPC know e.g. in which direction to look…
Good idea to make each hint a menu item - and since my scene are more like independant levels I don't have the problem you mentioned, I can simply create a hint menu for each scene - but good to know for the future :-)
I would also like to know how to do that - like the recipe in monkey island 2. If you examine the item it will be displayed full screen and Guybrush would read it out loudly...
