Making a disabled child object visibile after character switch

I've got quite the tricky issue that I'm tyring to fix. I'm going to outline what I'm doing and why it's so difficult.
I've got two characters which are essentially the same character but with different skins. And I've made it so the characters switch when a light switch is clicked (and vice versa). Now, the second character has a child object disabled onto it, which I'd like to enable when a object from inventory is clicked. Problem is, this child object (disabled) needs to follow this secondary character around (and it's quite an important feature), but everytime I try to make it enable, actionlists or any other type of action shows it as missing. Is there a work around that I can do to fix this without additional scripting? many thanks
