[2D] skidding animation (player still moves in idle pose)

I have set up a sprite with 8 Walk_ and 8 Idle_ poses. I am testing and have marked the moving ones with direction arrows and the idle ones with an identifier so I know what is going on. Now when the player moves around it skids as if skating on ice almost every time.

Is there something I should be setting which I have overlooked? I have ticked "freeze on idle" but this made no difference.

    Ordinarily I would say this is because there are animations missing, as I've seen what you describe. But it sounds like you have all directions covered, so maybe you could benefit from tweaking the movement values on the player prefab script? Specifically the acceleration and deceleration, those have the most impact on the feeling of 'skidding on ice' before the character comes to a halt.
