When moving with the WASD keys, I noticed that there is a slight delay in the character stopping. He always slides a bit.
Is there anyway to make him start and stop walking immediately?

Try raising the acceleration/deceleration values in the Player Inspector.
What numbers would you recommend? I tried making Acceleration and deceleration 100, but there was still a stall.
That should be high enough. You may also need to play with the Snap/Gravity values of the inputs themselves, as defined in Unity's Input Manager, since when released they may still take a few frames to zero themselves.
