Every time I gather Text it re-assigns numbers to my dialogue lines

This is causing a headache. Everytime I gather text, half of my dialogue gets assigned different numbers to what they originally were, which means I have to hunt them down and give the MP3 the new number. This is a right pain.

Any way to stop this?

    AC and Unity version numbers please.  More detail, too - ID numbers should not get re-assigned like that.

    What is the common factor between the dialogue that gets reassigned vs those that don't?  Are they asset files?  In scenes?  Only lines spoken by certain characters?  Does it occur if you click "Gather text" twice in succession, or only if certain steps are taken in-between?

    Please share as much information as you can.
  • Latest AC and Unity. There is no common factor. Basically when I add new dialogue with a new character, and gather text, it seems to refile all the numbers, and lot's of old dialogue gets reassigned to dialogue numbers right at the front, i.e. the highest number, when it was originally a very low number. I cannot say whether I have hit Gather text twice in succession, as this happens every time i Gather Text, so probably not.

    The Unity version number exactly, please.  With beta and patch releases, there are several definitions of "latest".

    Is your new character a Player or an NPC?  If a Player, are you checking "Is Player?" in the Dialogue: Play speech Action, or assigning them directly?  Again, are these Actions in asset files or scenes?

    I wasn't asking what happens if you previously clicked "Gather text" in succession - I'm asking you to try it.  Click "Gather text", let it process, and then click again - do the ID numbers get re-assigned each time?

    Let's also see a full shot of your Speech Manager settings, as well as an entry for a line that has been reset.
  • I'm not going to hit Gather Text again until all dialogue is in the game as i can't spend any more time re-naming dialogue. My dialogue is in a resources folder, in a Speech folder as explained in the manual. This has only recently started to happen. It is both NPC's and Player dialogue that is added, to existing and new characters. My player text is 'is player/ in the Dialogue: Play, but as i said, it was fine for ages, and has only recently started to happen. Unity number is 2017.4.0f1

    the bottom dialogue is one that i needed to rename - you'll see how the dialogue numbers don't follow naturally, it did once, but now the number is in the 6000's rather than following on naturally
  • So this wasn't occuring until you upgraded to Unity 2017.4?

    It's important to know the outcome of the repeated "Gather text" clicking.  Do it in a duplicate / backup project.
  • Hi Chris, it's definitely a recent thing. So i think it was after i upgraded.  I will try a gather text repeat click in a back up
